Binaural beats are a form of auditory illusion where two different pure-tone sine waves, both with frequencies lower than 1500 Hz, with less than a 40 Hz difference between them, are presented to the listener dichotically, meaning one in each ear. This creates the perception of a single tone that fluctuates in frequency and amplitude, a “beat”, which is the brain’s attempt to reconcile the two tones.
The alpha, theta, and delta frequencies in binaural beats correspond to different brainwave patterns and states of consciousness:
- Alpha Waves (8-14 Hz): Alpha frequencies in binaural beats are associated with a state of relaxed alertness, conducive to creativity and a calm, but aware mind. It’s a state often found during moments of rest with closed eyes, just before falling asleep, or during light meditation.
- Theta Waves (4-8 Hz): Theta frequencies are linked to meditation, deep relaxation, and creativity. This frequency range is typical during the first stage of sleep or when you’re awake but drowsy. Listening to binaural beats at a frequency around 6 Hz can induce a meditative state, which shows the potential of theta waves to access the subconscious mind.
- Delta Waves (0.5-4 Hz): Delta frequencies are the slowest and are found in the deepest stages of dreamless sleep. Delta binaural beats are therefore connected to the state of deep, restorative sleep. Slow-wave sleep, characterized by the production of delta waves, plays a crucial role in health and well-being. Delta waves can also be used for deep trance-like meditation.
The application of binaural beats in these frequencies can potentially alter the functional connectivity between brain regions. By targeting these specific frequencies, binaural beats can be used to entrain brainwave patterns and promote various mental states such as relaxation, sleep, and focus. For the most effective brainwave entrainment, it is recommended to use stereo headphones, as the binaural beats need to be heard separately in each ear to create the desired auditory illusion.
There are also other types of binaural beats such as beta and gamma, with beta being a higher frequency state associated with active thinking and alertness, and gamma being linked with higher mental activity and consolidation of information. However, when focusing on relaxation and meditative states, alpha, theta, and delta frequencies are the most relevant and will be where we initially focus our creative efforts.
Binaural beats can be a powerful tool for altering one’s state of consciousness, and when used correctly, may provide various benefits such as improved sleep, relaxation, and mental clarity. I use them for connecting with my guides and various extradimensional beings and also to do deep dives when I need a better understanding of my own behaviors. All of our Binaural Beat tracks will have audio from sacred sites as the natural “music” of the track. We currently have 1 set from Panther Meadows Spring, a sacred site on Mt. Shasta (the track includes the sound of the spring babbling by) and will soon be adding tracks with glorious wind gusting through evergreen trees, from the sacred Wind Mountain in the Columbia River Gorge.
